Victoria Bowmen Newsletter June - July 1998Yes, there is someone out there!! Welcome to the Victoria Bowmen Association, there were a few problems this year with communications, so to try and bring you all up-to-date with our club, we will attempt to resurrect the newsletter and bring it to you as often as possible. Hopefully in the months to come we will be able to bring you news on happenings from various committees of the club, and give you someplace to list items for sale or get other club information. I (Al Wills) am editing the first issue, I may do more or perhaps there is someone out there who would like to take on the task. It is merely a matter of attending our Board Meetings once a month and reporting on happenings in the club. In order to keep costs down we will be sending as many newsletters as possible out to those with email, so if you are getting this as "hard copy" and would like it sent electronically, let me know. Memberships The fact you have received this means you are listed as a member of the association, you should also be receiving a membership card from the British Columbia Archery Association, this is proof of your insurance and means your membership has been registered nationally. If you have not received your card (it should take about a month from when you join). Give me a call (474-4009) and I will check out your status for you. As I indicated above, there were a few problems earlier in the year, but we should have most of them straightened out by now. The Outdoor Range: I am sure all of you are familiar with our range, the following are a few hints to make it a better place for all and a place we can enjoy for years to come. ï While dogs are not allowed on the base property, we all tend to turn a "blind eye" to them, but they must be on a leash and tended by the owner at all times, also it is the bush, but consider your fellow club members and clean up after fido. ï The commissionaires have a job to do, they are to ensure that there is no unauthorized access to the remainder of the property. Please cooperate with them and keep only to the range, do not go onto other areas of the base. Follow their directions and be friendly, they are the reason there is nearly no vandalism on our range. ï The club house is for all members to use, so when you use it, please clean up after yourself, put the garbage away and turn out the lights and close the door when you leave. ï Speaking of garbage, there is no garbage pickup so it would be most appreciated if you could take out what you bring in. ï Also you must appreciate that the club is situated on one of the most beautiful tracts of land on the lower island, the forest is tinder dry at this time of year, so the same burning restrictions apply (no fires!). ï When you are shooting at close distances, move your target from the center of the butt, that area always wears out first and arrows shot from a close distance, do a lot more damage. Replace targets that are blown off and dispose of old targets. Wildlife Audit: The club property is being audited for the types of flora and fauna by the Victoria Natural History Society, you are asked to cooperate fully with them when you come across them, they will only be working in small areas at any one time, so it should not cause any conflicts. There will be a sign in the parking lot when they are there indicating the field course is closed. If you must shoot field that day, go out and find them and shoot in another area. Board of Directors: The following individuals are on the board to work to keep the club working as best they can, with your cooperation it would be a lot easier, please contact them with any concerns you may have: President

You should now mark an X for the inner ten/five and score it as a 10/5 and use a "M" for a miss, for example an inner ten, ten, ten, nine, eight, miss would be scored (after the air clears):
1998 BC Summer Games: Congratulations to the Victoria Bowmen members who made the summer games team this year, nearly all the competitors who shot the trials won a spot. Victoria Bowmen members will comprise most of the Zone 6 team. They are: Victor

share the disappointment of our Barebow shooters who were not able to
attend because their division is not being contested this year.
Congratulations Also congratulations to Victor Van Shaik for winning his 1000 FITA Star. - What is a FITA Star? A FITA Star is a pin presented by the Fédéderation Internationale de Tir à líArc for scores shot in registered FITA Star tournaments for scores of 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300 and 1350. The tournament must be conducted under strict FITA rules and is the same round shot round the world, so the FITA Star is an international badge of achievement worn proudly by archers everywhere.
